# The Treat Index

> The Treat Index analyzes premium pet treats by ingredient purity against their true price-per-ounce so dog owners can stop overpaying for filler.

## What This Site Does

The Treat Index is an independent comparison platform for premium dog treats. We scrape pricing and ingredient data from 26+ direct-to-consumer pet brands, normalize chaotic weight formats into a standardized $/oz metric, and run NLP analysis on ingredient lists to generate a proprietary 0-10 "Index Score."

## How the Index Score Works

Each product starts with a base score of 7.0/10. Points are added for premium indicators (raw, freeze-dried, single ingredient, named proteins like venison or beef liver) and subtracted for fillers and preservatives (corn, syrup, BHA, BHT, artificial ingredients, by-products, soy). Products with very short ingredient lists (≤2 ingredients) receive a bonus. The score is clamped to 0-10.
